  • ABOUT | Trapped in Suburbia

About Design duo Trapped in Suburbia spans multiple disciplines to turn design into immersive experiences. They believe that true understanding and connection come from active involvement: Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand. Combining graphic, branding, spatial, and interactive design, Trapped in Suburbia creates experiential works where originality is always the starting point. Their approach pushes boundaries, resulting in unexpected creations like exploding posters, oven-baked books, fog-filled exhibitions, and walls covered in sandpaper. Embracing playfulness and experimentation, their work is driven by curiosity and a refreshing, positive attitude—earning them the nickname The Harry Potters of design. From their Amsterdam studio, Cuby Gerards and Karin Langeveld collaborate on both commissioned and self-initiated projects, delivering unique experiences for a wide range of clients. Storytelling is central to our creative process, guiding every design decision we make. We foster a collaborative environment where our clients and audiences can join us as co-creators, forging personal connections that resonate. Our approach emphasizes that impactful design transcends visual appeal; it should evoke feelings and encourage exploration, resulting in moments that leave a lasting impression. The Medium is the Message Capturing the essence of a story is essential to our work, and we ensure that it is woven into every aspect of the experience. Each choice—from materials and storytelling techniques to lighting and sound—is carefully selected to reflect the core message. We prioritize simplicity; minimizing distractions allows visitors to connect instinctively with the narrative. The Power of Interaction We understand that experiences truly flourish through interaction. When individuals engage with our designs and one another, they add their unique perspectives, bringing static concepts to life. This interaction creates a playful and impactful atmosphere, and we strive to ensure that our experiences are intuitive and easy to navigate, leaving a memorable mark on every participant. Space and Time As visitors journey through our thoughtfully designed spaces, we present a variety of pathways for exploration. Whether they choose to glide through like a grasshopper or examine details closely like an ant, our layered stories engage individuals on multiple levels. This flexibility allows those eager to delve deeper to do so, while still providing a rich experience for those who may have limited time. Immersion into a Sensory World By designing environments that engage both the senses and emotions, we harness the power of imagination, encouraging exploration and creativity. The interplay between reality and imagination enriches our experiences, whether in digital realms or thoughtfully crafted physical spaces. This balance between emotion and reason enhances creativity and fosters deeper understanding, making each experience impactful. Ultimately, our spaces invite participants to connect, reflect, and engage in transformative ways.
